ALADDIN AND THE MAGIC LAMP - 1970 - RARE DVD
ALADDIN AND THE MAGIC LAMP (1970) is a feature-length adaptation of the Aladdin story directed by pioneering French animator Jean Image who, in 1950, directed France's first animated feature, JEANNOT L'INTREPIDE (aka JOHNNY THE GIANT KILLER). This is a weaker, lower-budgeted film than JEANNOT, but it's still an interesting cartoon version of the famous Arabian Nights tale.

GULLIVER'S TRAVELS (ANIMATED) (1939) - WITH SAM PARKER
Impressed by the success of Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Paramount Pictures ordered the studio's resident animation producer Max Fleischer to come up with a feature-length cartoon of his own. Utilizing an expanded staff and new production facilities in Miami, Florida, Fleischer and his brother Dave Fleischer spent six months mulling over story properties before deciding upon Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels; 20 months later, the film was completed and ready for release. Only the first part of Swift's novel, taking place in the miniature lands of Lilliput and Blefuscu, was used in the film, while the original plot, a satire of warfare stemming from an argument over which end of an egg to crack, was jettisoned entirely in favor of a sappy love story with slapstick overtones. Shipwrecked by a storm at sea, normal-sized Lemuel Gulliver washes up on the shore of Lilliput, where the citizens are no larger than Gulliver's thumb. Color. Runtime: 74 minutes.

OUR MR. SUN - EDDIE ALBERT - DIRECTED BY FRANK CAPRA - 1956 - RARE DVD
Since this is an educational film dramatizing facts about the sun it would be difficult to write a summary without spoilers. This summary is meant to excite and encourage viewing. I saw this educational movie in elementary school in the mid-1950s. The idea was to introduce the sun and its role as center of the solar system. There are close-ups of the sun showing sunspots on the sun's violent surface. It was explained that the Earth rotates on its axis so we see the sun in daytime on our side of the Earth and our side of the earth is turned away from the sun at night. The Earth revolves around the sun in one year causing the seasons. Facts about the sun include the distance from Earth to sun, that the sun is a star, how hot the sun is no one can live there), and how the sun provides light plants need to grow and warms land and water. Without "Our Mr. Sun" Earth would be a frozen, lifeless lump and we would not be here. (I believe another film long these lines is "Hemo the Magnificent" ...

Directors: Frank Capra, William T. Hurtz

PIXAR SHORT FILMS COLLECTION - 2007 - DVD
Pixar's unprecedented string of hit animated features was built on the short films in this collection. John Lasseter and Ed Catmull used these cartoons the way Walt Disney used the "Silly Symphonies" during the 1930s: as a training ground for artists and a way to explore the potential of a new medium. Although it's only 90 seconds long, "Luxo, Jr." (1986) ranks as the "Steamboat Willie" of computer animation: For the first time, audiences believed CG characters could think and feel. (It was also the first CG film to make audiences laugh.) The long-unseen films for Sesame Street are an unexpected bonus.
