MAN'S CASTLE" - RARE DVD - LORETTA YOUNG - SPENCER TRACY - (1933)
"A MAN'S CASTLE" (1933)

SPENCER TRACY - LORETTA YOUNG

Cast: LORETTA YOUNG, SPENCER TRACY, MARJORIE RAMBEAU, GLENDA FARREL One of the essential dramas of the Great Depression, a lyrical and touching drama of love set in a shanty-town. It features performances by Spencer Tracy and Loretta Young that are just about the finest of their careers, and it's a surpassing example of how the director, Frank Borzage, was able to create an almost fairy-tale aura around elements of poverty, crime, and horrendous social inequity, which just proves that how truly romantic and spiritual his talents were!

WINTER CARNIVAL - 1939 - ANN SHERIDAN - RICHARD CARLSON - RARE DVD
I find Winter Carnival a most interesting film for many reasons, some of which have nothing whatever to do with the plot, as flimsy but sorta fun as it is. One wonders about whatever input, if any, was done by F. Scott Fitzgerald, and why did he choose to do a film about Darmouth's famed Winter Carnival. It is enjoyable to see what might well be some of the actual footage of the Carnival -- many years ago, it was shown live from the campus on TV. Then, too, it's nice watching Ann Sheridan relax through a clean, interesting role. It is also intriguing to search for Robert Walker in one of the few things he did before heading back to Manhattan to find better roles on the stage. And watching a very very young Joan Brodel is a charmer -- she is enchanting, funny, cute -- and, soon, would change her name to Joan Leslie to become a delightful comedienne and dancer and actress-of-depth, though still under-appreciated. See the film, and enjoy.

THE MYSTERY TRAIN - 1931 - HEDDA HOPPER - RARE DVD
As a young boy I vividly remember watching David Janssen furtively running from the law back in the mid 1960's. The idea was fascinating . . . an innocent man convicted of crime escapes when the train carrying him to prison wrecks and he escapes. He was on the run from the law, trying to prove his innocence for the entire tv series. What a great plot for a spellbinding story. But wait . . . that idea was the basis of a motion picture some thirty years earlier . . . this motion picture! And guess what . . . in my humble opinion, this adventure is much more complex, much more fun, and with a much more complicated plot . . . including a young girl as the fugitive. Our fugitive is a young girl . . . handcuffed to the Sheriff and on the train heading for prison, played by silent screen star Marceline Day. Also aboard the train is the manipulative blackmailer, Mrs. Marian Radcliffe, played by film star Hedda Hopper. Just as in the later fugitive stories, the train wrecks and the young girl unlocks her handcuffs while the Sheriff is unconscious. And here is where the plot gets really interesting. Hedda Hopper is a wealthy lady on the train with her lawyer, played by Bryant Washburn. This is 1931, at the height of the Great Depression, and she has lost all of her wealth in the stock market crash of 1929, and is virtually penniless. Her lawyer tells her that it is a shame that she doesn't have a young daughter, because he is probating a will that gives millions to a young man, and a valuable necklace goes to the young man's wife. After the train crashes Hedda Hopper watches the young girl get out of her handcuffs and thinking quickly takes the young girl with her as her 'niece' - protecting her from the law. Her motive is to blackmail the young girl. Hedda Hopper will protect the young girl from going to prison, but the young girl must marry the wealthy young man and funnel his wealth to her. Later the Sheriff is hot on her trail, and the young girl is in fear for her future as she falls in love with the young wealthy boy that she can never marry because of her criminal conviction. And then, just when we have the story line all figured out . . . another surprise . . . and I will not tell you what it is . . . it is totally unexpected and puts a whole new twist on the story that later versions of the fugitive never imagined. What a delightfully twisted tale of love, crime, jewel robbery and trains out of control . . . . yes, plural trains . . . Our adventure both begins and ends with train wrecks that will change the lives of all involved forever, and there are more twists and turns in this amazing plot than on the road from Shanksville to Somerset. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with warm melted butter and enjoy the show.

David Belasco was a wealthy and successful Broadway producer during the first decades of the 1900’s, with two theatres in New York City and several others around the country. Some of the actors that worked in his productions were Lillian Gish, Cecil B. DeMille, Mary Pickford, Barbara Stanwyck, Lionel Barrymore, and others. In 1917 his production of “Polly with a Past” was playing in Baltimore, Maryland to work out any problems before making its debut in his Broadway theater.

Ina Claire, the leading lady in the show, got a telephone call from David Belasco telling her that he was going to make her a star. He instructed her to see one of his executives as soon as the show got to New York City. He offered her a contract, and when she asked how much her salary would be, he told her to name her own number. Ina Claire was a natural actor that exuded raw sensuality in an uninhibited and exciting way.

CRACKERJACK - 1938 - LILI PALMER - RARE DVD
If you are a longtime fan of classic movies and we are talking good-guy burglar romantic comedy, you will probably mention the 1955 movie with Cary Grant as the debonair cat burglar with Grace Kelly as the wealthy woman who discovers his identity and falls in love with him. In that movie Cary Grant is no longer a burglar and has gone straight even though no one believes him. In my humble opinion, there is only one way to top that story, but it could not be done in Hollywood . . . . You see, in the U.S. motion picture industry the censors’ guidelines were very strict for story plots and details down to the length of an onscreen kiss (no more than three seconds). Wouldn’t it be amazing if the burglar who could outwit the coppers wasn’t retired? Wouldn’t it be amazing if he was smart enough to continue robbing the rich. . . . Could any burglar get away with that? The burglar needs to be ‘perfect’ every time, but the cops only need to get one lucky break to capture him . . . But of course if he is retired there is no one to catch. . . Leave it to the Brits to craft a modern day Robin Hood burglar that will have us all hoping that he succeeds forever . . . Leave it to the Brits to weave a story with Scotland Yard, our Robin Hood burglar, a beautiful French girl who used to be in the Secret Service, and a band of gangsters . . . Leave it to the Brits to bring just the right amount of comedy, romance and crime suspense that will have us ignoring the ring of our phone or the knock on the door. . . . But remember that even British motion pictures from this era had to pass the eyes of censors . . . . Can the burglar successfully evade Scotland Yard for the entire movie? . . . When you get deeply into the plot of the story you will surely ignore the ringing phone and the knock at the door . . . Nothing will be more important than to see what happens next . . . Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter on it and enjoy the show.

HIS DOUBLE LIFE - 1934 - ROLAND YOUNG - RARE DVD
Lillian Gish and her sister Dorothy were born in Springfield, Ohio a few years before the beginning of the twentieth century. It was their great good fortune to have a father who was rarely at home and rarely sober. Because of their father’s absence, they needed to get jobs and earn money from a very young age. They both became accomplished stage actors, and when Lillian was nineteen years old, in 1912, she was offered a part in a story that was being put onto motion picture film in one of the first motion picture stories.

Lillian and Dorothy had so much personality and acting talent just oozing from their beings that their acting success would have been huge even without the invention of motion pictures, but riding the wave of this new technology catapulted them to world-wide fame. When talking pictures began to be made around 1930, while other silent actors faded into forgetfulness because their voices didn’t match their persona, Lillian became even more famous and in demand. Her motion picture career that began in 1912 didn’t end until an appearance in a 1987 movie. Lillian Gish passed in 1993, only a few months short of turning one hundred years old. If you want to see more of her, click on her name in the list of cast members and you will be magically transported to a list of her movies that are on the web site, just waiting for you to discover.

In this romantic comedy, she is Alice Chalice, a single girl living on the income from stock in a British beer company. The fates will bring her into contact with Roland Young, who plays the part of a wealthy but very timid oil painter. Watch for the scene where Mother Leek and her two clergymen sons visit their home, and take note of her acting, . . . . her words, her body language, her timing, her delivery. It is amazing, compared to most 1933 acting. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.

A WOMAN'S MAN - 1934 - JOHN HALLIDAY - RARE DVD
A couple of days ago as I was watching the local television news from Youngstown, Ohio I saw a sports clip featuring the middle weight boxing champion from 2007-2010, a local fellow named Kelly 'The Ghost' Pavlic, announce that he was retiring from boxing, and would not try to reclaim the title. In 1934 when this movie was filmed the middleweight boxing champ was Vince Dundee, but in this adventure young Joe Flynn, played by actor Wallace Ford, is fighting for the middleweight title. Movie star Gloria Jordan is having her problems on the set of her latest movie. She is a stuck-on-herself dame who snubs her nose at the director, her leading man and everyone else on the set. The director is about fed up with her shenanigans and poor, emotionless acting, but she is a 'star' - so everyone puts up with her . . . even her long-time friend Molly Evans, played by Kitty Kelly. The director in one scene tells her that the simple young actress that she used to be is now dead from Hollywood-itits, and her career is almost over. Star Gloria is romantically attached to wealthy playboy Roger Pentley, and when he leaves town on an extended cruise Gloria decides that she wants to have an affair with a young, handsome boxer that she spots one afternoon while horseback riding in the park. The fighter is totally enamored with the movie star, and she strings him along quite nicely . . . but his attention to her is harming his training for the big fight. Then, to complicate matters, playboy Roger returns to town amid stories of his affairs with another lady while he was gone. Gloria quickly tosses fighter Joe to the curb and runs after playboy Roger on the night before the big fight! What a mess! Of course this could never happen outside Hollywood, could it? Heh . . . . the names are different . . . the careers are different . . . but love triangles like this happen every day in just about every small town and large. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with warm melted butter on it and enjoy the show.

OF HUMAN BONDAGE - 1934 - BETTE DAVIS - RARE DVD
Mildred, played by Bette Davis, is a pasty-faced pale blonde girl who is a waitress in a London restaurant. She is the very definition of the poor working girl with a dynamite body who is a cocky and callous, flirty tease who will never truly love a man. She will only use men for what they can give her today, tossing them to the curb when a new man offers more.

Legendary Leslie Howard is Philip Carey, a sensitive and loving man with a club foot that causes him to limp, and prevents him from dancing with his women. He is a failed artist who becomes a medical student, falling fatally in love with Mildred. He soon discovers that he is her ‘last’ choice for a playmate, but he will love her anyway, waiting for her return to him after her affairs with other men.

Mildred will flirt with Philip only when she needs something from him. Philip will be her slave when she need him, even knowing that she despises him. Philip is in bondage by his love for Mildred, but Mildred will only tease Philip when she needs something that her other men won’t give her.

Sometimes it seems that the worst people in the world find success and fortune while the best people in the world inherit nothing but poverty and despair. But we are all ‘farmers’ in life. If we plant stinkweed all our life, we cannot expect to live in a rose garden. But if we plant smiles and love, with enough patience and persistence, we will one day reap what we have planted, many times greater. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.

NIGHT ALARM - 1934 - JUDITH ALLEN - RARE DVD
In 1904 Colonel Etienne de Bujac was a wealthy lawyer in Carlsbad, New Mexico, and when his son was born he named him Étienne Pelissier Jacques de Bujac. Étienne dropped out of college to work at odd jobs, in search of a careeer that would keep him interested. He was a prize fighter, a slaughterhouse worker, an insurance salesman, a real estate salesman, and more, never finding a job that could hold his interest for long.

One day he happened to be at a Hollywood party and got into a discussion with movie producer David O. Selznick, who gave him some movie acting roles, beginning with the 1931 action serial ‘Heroes of the Flames.’ In 1933 he got a leading role in a jungle adventure, and became instantly famous as the man who rescued Fay Wray from King Kong.

When Étienne Pelissier Jacques de Bujac began acting, he changed his name to a shorter and more memorable ‘Bruce Cabot.’ In this action adventure, he is a new reporter for the New York Times, writing the garden column. His real interest is in crime reporting, especially crimes involving massive building fires.

Reporter Hal Ashby is always chasing the fire engines in search of the adventure of man against flames, and he has the belief that the wealthiest man in town is burning down his own buildings to collect on the insurance. As fate would have it, the daughter of the wealthy businessman gets a job on the newspaper. Hal has no idea that the new reporter is the daughter of the wealthy man he is hoping to nail for arson, and he falls in love with her.

This leads to that and when he writes a scathing newspaper article about her father, she reveals that she is his daughter, and the wedding is off, the relationship is off, and Hal is once again writing home and garden stories instead of fighting crime. Then the big fire starts in the main building that the wealthy man owns, and his daughter is trapped in the burning flames. "Shadows of the Orient" was originally (and still is) a Larry Darmour production made under the Empire Films banner in 1935 and released in August of 1935, although Motion Picture Herald did not review it until February of 1936. Following the reorganization of Monogram, after W. Ray Johnston, Scott R. Dunlap, Trem Carr and Paul Malvern broke away from their short stay at Republic Pictures, Monogram was in need of product to fill their exhibitor committments and picked up the film from whatever state-rights limbo it was in, and sent it back out on August 13, 1937 under a Monogram Pictures logo with nothing to indicate it was a re-issue of a two year-old film. Its first New York showing was at the Central Theatre on October 11, 1937, 27 months after initial release through the Empire exchanges, and it had lost three minutes from its original 68 minutes. The Foreword tells it all: "Since the passing of the Oriental Exclusion Act the smuggling of aliens has been constant. Although the ...
