AL BOWLLY - LEGENDS - RARE DVD
LEGENDS: AL BOWLLY - DVD

Nearly 70 years after his death, Al Bowlly is still fondly remembered as the most popular vocalist in Britain during the 1930s. Like Crosby, he showcased a huge range of material and was a true international recording artist. He was born in Mozambique to Greek and Lebanese parents and arrived in London (via Berlin) in 1927 as a member of Fred Elizalde's orchestra. In the early 1930s, Bowlly went solo and worked mainly with Ray Noble and Lew Stone to record over 500 songs. In 1934, he travelled to New York where he was hugely successful. In 1936 he returned to England, appearing mainly (but not exclusively) with his own band, the Radio City Rhythm Makers. He also joined with Jimmy Messini as Radio Stars with Two Guitars. He was killed when a German bomb exploded outside his apartment in 1941.

ALFRED HITCHCOCK - LIVING FAMOUSLY! - BBC-TV - RARE DVD
Living Famously: Alfred Hitchcock

1/20/03 ~ BBC-TV

The program shows how, from his earliest childhood in the suburbs of London, Alfred Hitchcock was a precociously sedentary loner. His active imagination helped him gain an apprenticeship in the fledgling British movie business, from where he travelled to Germany to learn the craft of film-making before returning to make Blackmail. With his script editor wife Alma by his side, Hitchcock made a series of British thrillers including The 39 Steps and The Lady Vanishes, which brought him to the attention of top Hollywood producer, David O. Selznick. David O. Selznick brought Hitchcock to Hollywood to make the film Rebecca, which, despite the pair's difficult relationship, gained them the Oscar for best picture. As Hitchcock settled into the Hollywood lifestyle, he embarked on a series of thrillers including Spellbound, Rear Window, North By Northwest and Strangers On A Train that proved his mastery of the silver screen. Working with the best Hollywood actors, Hitchcock imposed his methodical regime and darkest imaginings on his performers, creating some of the genre's finest moments. In the late 1950s, he became a star in his own right when he presented his series Alfred Hitchcock Presents... for American television. His reputation for taking his audiences on a roller coaster of terror was cemented by his 1960s films, Psycho and The Birds. Hitchcock sought to control the life of his leading lady, Tippi Hedren, resulting in his being outcast from Hollywood, forcing a return to Britain and a gradual and unwelcome descent into obscurity. 1 hour.

CLARA BOW - HOLLYWOOD'S LOST SCREEN GODDESS - 12-20-12 - BBC-TV - RARE DVD
Clara Bow, Hollywood’s Lost Screen Goddess 12/20/12 ~ BBC-TV “Clara Bow is almost forgotten today, but as a silent film star, her level of fame was unparalleled. Lauded as the first ever sex symbol, for a while she was box office gold. She was a trailblazer, whose natural acting style hadn't been seen before. Biographer David Stenn asserts: “Billy Wilder called it ‘flesh impact’ … and the only people he ever saw who had that were Clara Bow and Marilyn Monroe.” But in just a few short years everything had changed. Clara Bow’s public fall from grace into virtual obscurity reflects a turbulent period for Hollywood as a whole. It came at a time when one of the most significant changes in cinematic history took place, the switch from the hugely popular silent films to the talkies. This documentary tells the life story of an actress born on the wrong side of the tracks who, for a while, became Hollywood royalty. The film is a rediscovery of a significant talent destroyed by hypocrisy and fame”. 1 hour.

CHARLIE CHAPLIN - AT KEYSTONE STUDIOS - RARE DVD
This out-of-print Kino direct to VHS video provides the best showcase of the Little Tramp's yearlong tenure with Mack Sennett's Fun Factory. Running nearly an hour, "Charlie Chaplin at Keystone Studios" features good transfers of five embryonic shorts from 1914: MAKING A LIVING-- His screen debut as a tricky "dandy" beggar. After taking a newspaper job, the Swindler sees a car go over a cliff. He grabs a rival's camera and presents the photo in it as his own. He's then pursued by the angry photographer. CAUGHT IN A CABARET-- Charlie the waiter rescues Mabel from a thug and is invited to dinner at her parents' home. The card he presents misidentifies Charlie as a Greek Ambassador. Mabel's jealous boyfriend follows him back to the restaurant, learns the truth and plans to expose her hero as a fraud. MABEL'S BUSY DAY-- Chaplin as one of his music hall characters, the Tipsy Nuisance. Brief comedy showcases many early Keystone heavyweights, including Sennett himself. THE MASQUERADER-- After getting kicked off a movie set for his bad acting, Charlie returns in full drag. Although the director likes "her," Chaplin still doesn't end up in the film. THE ROUNDERS-- Two drunken sophisticates go off on a toot together. They disrupt a dinner crowd and end up passed out in a slowly sinking rowboat. Actors: Charles Chaplin, Mabel Normand, Roscoe Arbuckle, Marie Dressler, Chester Conklin Directors: Charles Chaplin, Mabel Normand, Mack Sennett, Henry Lehrman, George Nichols

THE STORY OF CHESS RECORDS - RARE DVD
THE STORY OF CHESS RECORDS U.K. film. Chicago's Chess Records was one of the greatest labels of the post-war era, ranking alongside other mighty independents like Atlantic, Stax and Sun. From 1950 until its demise at the end of the 60s, Chess released a myriad of electric blues, rock 'n' roll and soul classics that helped change the landscape of black and white popular music.

There are only a handful of record labels that can claim to have changed the course of popular music. Chess Records is one of them. Responsible for signing and developing some of the greatest names in music, such as Muddy Waters, Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley and Howlin' Wolf, Chess provided the fundamental foundation for rock and roll as we know it.

Although known primarily as the home of the blues, its output covers a stunning mix of styles including rock 'n' roll, doo-wop, R&B and soul as well as progressive new directions in psychedelic jazz and funk. Now it is time for it to take its rightful place at the top table alongside other groundbreaking black music labels such as Motown, Studio One and Stax.

This film reveals how two Polish immigrants, Leonard and Phil Chess, forged relationships with black musicians in late 1940s Chicago, shrewdly building a specialty blues record label into a huge independent worth millions by the end of the 1960s. Full of dramatic period detail, it places the Chess story within a wider social and historical context—as well as being about some of the greatest music ever recorded, it is, inevitably, about race in America during the 1950s & 1960s.

AMERICAN CINEMA - 100 YEARS OF FILM - MAKING - 5 DVDS - COLLECTION - RARE
Given the difficulty of living up to such an ambitious title, American Cinema, a nine-hour public television overview of the movies, is a remarkably entertaining, informative, and informed introduction to movies in the U.S., from the silent era to the Sundance generation. Divided into 10 self-contained episodes, the series begins by looking at the practical magic of movies. "The Hollywood Style" and "The Star" examine the underpinnings of filmmaking and star making in carefully chosen examples and contrasts: the changing Hollywood style from Casablanca to Chinatown, the studio-controlled career of Joan Crawford compared to modern star Julia Roberts. Later episodes single out specific genres for study ("Romantic Comedy," "Film Noir," "The Western," and "The Combat Film") and chart the changing face of Hollywood from "The Studio System" to "Film in the Television Age" to "The Film School Generation," concluding with the American independent explosion in "The Edge of Hollywood." A rich array of illustrative film clips and interviews with directors and stars as well as commentary by historians and critics invigorate this whirlwind tour through the dream factory. It's a smartly written project and a solid introduction to American movies that, for all its generality, creates absorbing and entertaining film history 601

This is the rare 5 DVD, 10 episode special edition that was released only to schools, libraries and other academic institutions. It contains the original 10 episodes.

AMERICAN CINEMA EPISODES

Disc 1:

1. The Hollywood Style - 60 min. In the classical Hollywood film, the story is primary. Filmmakers rely on style — structure, narrative, and visual elements — to effectively tell their story. Martin Scorsese and Sydney Pollack are among the premier directors who discuss how classical Hollywood style, evolving and yet enduring over time, informs their work.

2. The Studio System - 60 min. This program surveys Hollywood's industrial past during the era of contract players and directors, studio police forces, and colorful movie moguls. It also looks at the filmmaking environment of today with studio heads Michael Eisner, Howard Koch, and others. Paramount Pictures, one of the oldest and most successful of the Hollywood studios, serves as a case study.

Disc 2:

1. The Star - 60 min. Greta Garbo, Cary Grant, Dustin Hoffman — these among many others are names synonymous with Hollywood. Early on, Hollywood saw that recognizable talent could minimize the financial risks of film production. Critics, film scholars, and studio publicists view the stars from many angles: as marketing tools, cultural icons, and products of the industry. Joan Crawford headlines as a case study of the cultural phenomenon of stardom.

2. The Western - 60 min. The western is an American myth that has been translated by other cultures and reinterpreted time and again, but never dies. With clips and critical commentary on westerns from John Ford's Stagecoach through the work of Arthur Penn, Sam Peckinpah, and Clint Eastwood, the program traces the aesthetic evolution of the genre as well as its sociological importance.

Disc 3:

1. Romantic Comedy - 60 min. Breezy and silly to witty and intelligent, romantic comedies have been with us since the 1930s. But the surface humor has often just barely masked issues of gender and sexuality. This program looks back on screwball comedies including It Happened One Night and His Girl Friday. Directors James Brooks and Nora Ephron present interpretations of the genre that reveal the underlying social and psychological messages.

2. The Combat Film - 60 min. Beginning with World War II combat films — produced under directives from the federal government — this program examines the role of the combat film in filling a social and political need. Critics and directors describe the evolution of these films, the rise of the Vietnam film, and the influence of the newsreel documentaries and TV news on the genre. Disc 4:

1. Film Noir - 60 min. These cynical and pessimistic films from the 1930s and '40s touched a nerve in Americans. Historians link the genre's overriding paranoia to Cold War-related angst over the nuclear threat and the Hollywood blacklist. In addition, a cinematographer demonstrates the creation of noir lighting, which gave films their peculiar look and emphasized the themes of corruption and urban decay.

2. Film in the Television Age - 60 min. Television first arrived in American homes just as the Hollywood studio system was collapsing. As the new medium took hold, so did a new era of motion picture entertainment. Top directors, actors, and film scholars trace the influence of each medium on the other, from the live and fresh dramas of the Golden Age of Television and the growth of Hollywood spectacles to the megalithic entertainment industry of today.

Disc 5:

1. The Film School Generation - 60 min. Maverick filmmakers of the 1960s and '70s, including Brian DePalma, Martin Scorsese, and Steven Spielberg, capitalized on new technology and borrowed from classical Hollywood and French New Wave as they reinvented the American film. The financial and cultural forces that contributed to their success and commercial clout are explored.

2. The Edge of Hollywood - 60 min. While many of the old rules are still in force, independent filmmakers today often add their dissenting voices to the forum. This program looks at some alternative visions from new talents including Spike Lee, Joel and Ethan Coen, Jim Jarmusch, and Quentin Tarantino. With limited budgets, they are challenging the stylistic status quo of the Hollywood film.

BELA LUGOSI: HOLLYWOOD'S DARK PRINCE - RICHARD KILEY - BELA LUGOSI - RARE DVD
This was a pretty fascinating biography. Bela Lugosi certainly led a memorable, adventurous life. He starred on stage and on film in two continents and was married four times - once for four days!

Outside of those poor nuptial performances, I thought he came off as a good man, a good actor, and a man who often didn't get the breaks or his acting legacy would have been greater. Years after this death, Lugosi has become a true "Hall Of Fame" acting celebrity, however, and is given credit for his talents and dedication to his craft.

THE INCREDIBLE STRANGE - FILM SHOW - ED WOOD JR - RARE DVD
Hacks are nothing new in Hollywood. Since the beginning of the film industry at the turn of the 20th century, thousands of untalented people have come to Los Angeles from all over America and abroad to try to make it big (as writers, producers, directors, actors, talent agents, singers, composers, musicians, artists, etc.) but who end up using, scamming and exploiting other people for money as well as using their creative ability (either self-taught or professional training), leading to the production of dull, bland, mediocre, unimaginative, inferior, trite work in the forlorn hope of attaining commercial success. Had Edward D. Wood been born a decade or two earlier, it's easy to imagine him working for some Poverty Row outfit in Gower Gulch, competing with the likes of no-talent and no-taste producers and directors--such as Victor Adamson, Robert J. Horner and Dwain Esper--for the title of all-time hack. He would have fit in nicely at Weiss Brothers-Artclass in the early 1930s or at PRC (Producers Releasing Corporation) in the following decade. Ed Wood is the most well known of all the Hollywood hacks because he is imprisoned in his own time, and in the 1950s, Ed Wood simply had no competition. He was ignored throughout his spectacularly unsuccessful career and died a penniless alcoholic, only to be "rediscovered" when promoters in the early 1980s tagged him "The Worst Director of All Time" (mostly thanks to the Medveds' hilarious book, "Golden Turkey Awards") and he was given the singular honor of a full-length biopic by Tim Burton )Ed Wood (1994)). This post-mortem celebrity has made him infinitely more famous today than he ever was during his lifetime.

WHEN THE APPLAUSE DIED - DOCUMENTARY - RARE DVD
Hollywood's glittering stars and starlets have always been the envy of the movie-going public. With their fame, wealth and lush lifestyles, they epitomize the "good life" we find so glamorous. Yet every pleasure has its price, and sometimes bearing the burden of fame can be an overwhelming task. All too often, celebrities find refuge and solace in a bottle of booze, a vial of pills, or a dirty syringe...and destroy their careers, families, and lives in the process. Through exclusive footage and little known facts, When the Applause Died (1990)takes an uncensored, shocking look at Hollywood's brightest stars and music's hottest rockers who burned out and faded away due to their own self-abuse. 'Spencer Tracy', William Holden, Errol Flynn...names that conjure images of self-satisfied greatness. And yet despite their fame and fortune, these stars and many others featured in this documentary were unable to enjoy the fruits of their labor without numbing themselves to what should have been an idyllic existence.

BURT LANCASTER DARING TO REACH - DVD
Born November 2, 1913, he went from street-wise tough to art-collector liberal-activist, from circus-acrobat hunk to Academy Award winner. Burton Stephen Lancaster - later Burt Lancaster - was one of five children of a New York City postal worker. Burt recalled family life as warm and mutually supportive. At the Union Settlement House, he and boyhood friend Nick Cravat formed an acrobatic team. By eighteen, Burt was 6'2'' and blessed with the athletic physique and dynamic good looks that helped make him famous. A basketball scholarship was not enough to keep him in NYU beyond his sophomore year. That's when he and the 5'2'' Cravat joined a circus, earning $3 weekly between them. A stint in the Army introduced Burt to acting and led him to Hollywood where his first release, The Killers (1946), propelled him to stardom at age 32. He took control of his own career and seldom faltered. He was married three times and had five children. Upon his death in 1994, four-time Academy ...

SPIRIT OF YOUTH - 1938 - JOE LOUIS - RARE DVD
America is well known for its passion for killing criminals. Doctor Martin Luther King wrote in 1964, “More than twenty-five years ago, one of the southern states adopted a new method of capital punishment. Poison gas supplanted the gallows. In its earliest stages, a microphone was placed inside the sealed death chamber so that scientific observers might hear the words of the dying prisoner. The first victim was a young Negro. As the pellet dropped into the container, and the gas curled upward, through the microphone came these words: Save me, Joe Louis. Save me, Joe Louis. Save me, Joe Louis.”

It takes more than a few sentences to accurately describe any sports legend, but with great humility I’d like to share a few facts that might inspire you to search for more information about the life and legend of Joe Louis Barrow. Boxing authority Ring Magazine in 2003 listed the greatest punchers of all time, and boxer Joe Louis was number one. With 70 professional boxing matches Joe Louis had 52 knock outs and only three losses. He is usually listed as the fourth greatest boxer of all time.

Joe Louis had three losses out of 70 matches, and one loss was to German champion fighter Max Schmeling in 1936. In June of 1938, a couple of months after Joe Louis finished filming this movie, he faced Max Schmeling in the boxing ring once again. On the evening of June 22, 1938, the boxing match was broadcast live on radio throughout the world, and it probably had the largest worldwide audience for any live event up to that time. The match lasted a few seconds more than two minutes. Max Schmeling managed two feeble punches at the Brown Bomber while Joe Louis pummeled Schmeling. Schmeling dropped to the canvas three times in those two minutes, and the third time he fell to the floor he did not get up, ending the fight.

Power like Joe Louis had always commands respect, but Joe Louis was about more than brute power. During the 1930’s many famous boxers became infamous because of their scandalous private lives. Early in his career Joe Louis adopted seven commandments that he would live by to avoid any public scandal. Those seven rules were: 1. Never have a picture taken with a white woman. 2. Never go to a nightclub alone. 3. There will be no soft fights. 4. There will be no fixed fights. 5. Never gloat over a fallen opponent. 6. Keep a ‘dead pan’ expression in front of cameras. 7. Live and fight clean.

Joe Louis, nicknamed the Brown Bomber, was a legendary and ferocious fighter inside the boxing ring, and a gracious gentleman outside the ring. Joe Louis also had a passion for golf, and in 1952, after retiring from the boxing ring, he became the first black man that was allowed to play in a PGA tour event, thanks to a sponsor’s exemption. Joe Louis died in 1981 and President Ronald Reagan waived the rules for Arlington Cemetary so that Joe Louis could be buried there. Former apponent Max Schmelling paid for the funeral and was a pallbearer at the ceremony. Joe Louis was a complete and total legend among all athletes, and a world-changing gentleman among men of any color between 1934 and 1951. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.

HERCULE POIROT'S CHRISTMAS - (TV MOVIE - FEATURING AGATHA CHRISTIE'S DETECTIVE) - PIERRE BAYARD - RARE DVD
The Murder of Roger Ackroyd is one Agatha Christie's most famous novels. Its fame rests on a narrative device, profoundly original in its day (1926): murderer and narrator are one and the same. The author was thoroughly pilloried by critics at the time for this. They considered her invention an unfair trick on readers, that broke the rules of detective fiction. Eighty years later, Pierre Bayard, a professor of literature and psychoanalyst, offers a fascinating deconstruction of the novel. Quite apart from the technical aspects of his analysis, Bayard reaches an absolutely convincing, yet astounding conclusion: Agatha Christie is guilty of a miscarriage of justice. The murderer cannot be Dr Sheppard, as Hercule Poirot so blithely asserts.

JANIS - LITTLE GIRL BLUE - JANIS JOPLIN - RARE DVD
Janis Joplin is one of the most revered and iconic of all rock & roll singers, a tragic and misunderstood figure who thrilled millions of listeners and blazed new creative trails before her death in 1970 at age 27. With “Janis: Little Girl Blue,” Oscar-nominated director Amy J. Berg (“Deliver Us from Evil,” “West of Memphis”) examines Joplin’s story in depth, presenting an intimate, insightful portrait of a complicated, driven, often beleaguered artist. Joplin’s own words tell much of the film’s story through a series of letters she wrote home over the years, many made public here for the first time (and read by Southern-born indie rock star/actor Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power). Joplin was a powerhouse when she sang, and her recordings have never left the radio or the hearts of rock fans. Berg’s “Janis: Little Girl Blue” offers new understanding of a bright, complex woman whose meteoric rise and sudden demise changed music forever and continues to influence female musicians. "Janis: Little Girl Blue," written and directed by Amy J. Berg and produced by Academy Award-winner Alex Gibney (“Going Clear,” “Taxi to the Dark Side”), features exclusive interviews with musicians Pink, Kris Kristofferson, Melissa Etheridge, Bob Weir, Juliette Lewis, famed TV presenter Dick Cavett, counterculture filmmaker D.A. Pennebaker and the Joplin family. This Special Director's Edition Blu-ray comes packed with over 30 minutes of bonus features, including extended interviews with family, friends, and musicians that Janis inspired, a musical performance by The Big Brother Guys and an exclusive look into the Walk of Fame Ceremony for Janis. English subtitles for the deaf and hearing impaired included. “FIVE STARS! ELECTRIC, INTIMATE AND HEARTBREAKING!” – BBC “ENTHRALLING!” – New York Times “FIERCELY BRILLIANT!” – Variety “MIND-BLOWING!”

DAWSON CITY - FROZEN IN TIME - 2016 - RARE DVD
Dawson City: Frozen Time, pieces together the bizarre true history of a collection of some 500 films dating from 1910s - 1920s, which were lost for over 50 years until being discovered buried in a sub-arctic swimming pool deep in the Yukon Territory, in Dawson City, located about 350 miles south of the Arctic Circle. Using these permafrost protected, rare silent films and newsreels, archival footage, interviews and historical photographs to tell the story, and accompanied by an enigmatic score by Sigur Rós collaborator and composer Alex Somers (Captain Fantastic), Dawson City: Frozen Time depicts a unique history of a Canadian gold rush town by chronicling the life cycle of a singular film collection through its exile, burial, rediscovery, and salvation - and through that collection, how a First Nation hunting camp was transformed and displaced.

RHAPSODY IN BLACK - 2002 - DVD
Ten black artists that changed the face of American music forever. Ten magical performances immortalized by CBC cameras. They lived in the United States in a time when racism was legal and sometimes lethal. They confronted segregation daily in clubs, hotels and restaurants. They encountered it in the recording industry where, if their records were labeled "Race Records", they could be marketed only to black consumers. And in television, they were relegated to secondary roles, and racial taboos limited their interaction with white hosts. Despite it all, they triumphed. They took their music where the work was - at home or abroad.

APPOINTMENT WITH DESTINY - LORNE GREENE - 1971 - 1973 - RARE DVD
Using dramatic voice-over narration and detailed period re-enactments, this short lived CBS historical pseudo-documentary series examined the events leading up to the deaths of famous historical figures. It was developed out of The Last Days of John Dillinger (1971). Gripping but melodramatic, it used grainy film stock and chiaroscuro lighting to simulate the appearance of "actual documentary footage" from eras before such things existed (episodes included analysis of the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and the Crucifixion of Jesus). Despite the difference in style, it can be considered a close cousin to its contemporary, the CBS revival series "You Are There" (1972), which was shot in ENG format with CBS news commentators appearing on camera amid the events depicted (often in period costume).

EVERY LITTLE STEP - 2008 - JUSTIN BELLERO - DVD
Starting at midnight January 26, 1974, dancer and choreographer Michael Bennett held a twelve-hour taped get-together with twenty-two dancers talking about themselves, he not knowing exactly where it would lead. It would become the genesis for what has become one of the most influential Broadway musicals of all time, and a show which speaks to theatrical dancers' hearts: "A Chorus Line". In 2008, a Broadway revival of the show is being mounted, with many involved in the original production part of the creative team behind the revival. The issue for the revival's creative team is to make the show and the casting fresh, while respecting the original, where the characters, their stories and their related songs all came out of the 1974 dancers' stories, they who were cast in the original production. Although the names and the faces have changed from 1974, the dancers auditioning mirror many of the stories and issues faced by those original dancers. As such, they "really want this job" as it speaks to who they are and what they do and want to do for a living. It ends up being a difficult process for both sides as there end up being 3,000 dancers at the start of the eight month audition process.

This film chronicles the major events that contributed to the settlement of the western frontier, beginning in France as Napoleon Bonaparte grants President Thomas Jefferson that vast tract of wilderness beyond the Mississippi River known as the Louisiana Purchase, and ending in 1890 when the U.S. Census Bureau declared that there was no more frontier; it had been settled.
