Outlaw Deputy (1935) / West Of Rainbow's End (1938)
A double feature of films starring Tim McCoy:

Outlaw Deputy (1935, B&W): When his friend is murdered by outlaw Bill Sanderson, Tim Mallory exacts vengeance by leading a band of "outlaws" on a string of stage robberies and cattle rustlings, taking only what the killer has previously stolen from others. Once the score is settled, he disbands the gang, but some of his men aren't ready to give up the bad life. After breaking up a payroll heist perpetrated by one of his ex-gang members, Tim is elected deputy sheriff of Goldland. His efforts to clean up the town run afoul of local crime boss Howger, who learns of Mallory's "outlaw" past and makes plans to exploit that dark secret.Tim McCoy is at his quick-drawing best under the two-fisted direction of Otto Brower, who later supervised second unit sequences for such 20th Century-Fox classics as Jesse James (1939), Stanley and Livingstone (1939), and The Grapes of Wrath (1940).

West of Rainbow's End (1938, B&W): Retired railroad detective Jim Hart is called back into action after his foster father "Lightnin' Ed" is killed during a hunt for a gang of train bandits led by Jake Johnson. Arriving in town to investigate, Hart learns from cafe owner, Joan Carter, that her family is being pressured into selling off their property as part of an ambitious land swindle. Suspecting a link between Ed's murder and the troubles at the Carter ranch, the detective zeroes in on Johnson and his gang as they, in turn, plot to end Hart's meddling with a bullet.

West of Rainbow's End marked cowboy star Tim McCoy's return to the screen following his 1937 tour for Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus (McCoy's own ill-fated Wild West tent show premiered shortly after the film's release). Produced for the Monogram Pictures studio, this taut shoot-'em-up boasts impressive gunplay and such colorful six-gun dialogue as "There ain't room in this town for both of us! So git goin' and keep goin'!"

THE DURANGO KID COLLECTION - 12 FILMS IN 6 DVDS
"It's the Durango Kid!" came the shouted exclamation from the B-western on-screen heavies as well as the Saturday matinee front row kids. Altho the Dartmouth College educated Charles Starrett didn't set out to make his mark in screen history as the black masked Durango Kid of '40s and '50s B-western fame, he became as synonymous with the character as Clayton Moore was with the Lone Ranger and William Boyd was to Hopalong Cassidy.

BOB LIVINGSTON WESTERNS COLLECTION - 10 MOVIES - 5 DVDS
BOB LIVINGSTON WESTERNS COLLECTION:

SET #1 LAW OF THE SADDLE - Law of the Saddle stars Bob Livingston as Rocky Cameron, aka "The Lone Rider". With his sidekick Fuzzy Q. Jones (Al St. John), Rocky rides into a small town plagued by cattle rustlers. WOLVES OF THE RANGE - Dorn, is after the rancher's landWhen Rocky (Bob Livingston) volunteers to ride to the next town for money, he is ambushed by Dorn's men, loses his memory, and is jailed for supposedly stealing the money

SET #2 RAIDERS OF RED GAP - Charles King plays Jack Bennett, the head of a crooked cattle syndicate attempting to drive away the local ranchers in order to build a packing plant. WILD HORSE RUSTLERS - Hero Tom Cameron (Bob Livingston) discovers that his twin brother (also Bob Livingston) is with a group of German spies. The villains intend to thwart the government's efforts to round up horses for military service

SET #3 DEATH RIDES THE PLAINS - Serial killers are on the loose in this "Lone Rider" entry. A couple of crooks, Ben Gowdey (Ray Bennett) and Grogan (I. Stanford Jolley) have repeatedly sold the Circle C Ranch to unsuspecting buyers, whom they summarily rob and kill before signing the papers. BOLD CABALLERO (in color) - a rare color version of the "Zorro" legend. Robert Livingston essays the dual role of foppish Spanish-Californian aristocrat Don Diego, who when the necessity arises dons the mask and black cape of righter-of-wrongs Zorro. It is very rare to find a color print of this classic and we have it!

SET #4 BENEATH WESTERN SKIES - a cowboy is struck on the head and loses his memory. Opportunistic outlaws then assure him that he is in their gang. OVERLAND - STAGECOACH - To get control of the stage line, Kent has started a feud between the approaching railroad and the stage company. To help out, Fuzzy sends for his friend Tom (Bob Livingston) Cameron, the Lone Rider. But Kent has installed a secret compartment on the stage where his man can hide and he soon has both Tom and Fuzzy wanted for murder.

SET #5 LARAMIE TRAIL - When first we meet Livingston, he appears to be an ingenuous dude, unwise to the harsh ways of the West. He proves to have more grit than expected when he rescues innocent cowboy John James from a murder rap. The overall brooding atmosphere seems attuned to a Raymond Chandler detective story. PRIDE OF THE PLAINS - Livingston is cast as Johnny Revere, while Smiley Burnette reprises his tried-and-true "Frog Millhouse" screen persona. Johnny and Frog take on a bad guy (Kenneth MacDonald) who intends to raid a government-protected herd of wild horses for his own financial gain.

BOSS OF BULLION CITY - MARIA MONTEZ, JOHNNY MACK BROWN
BOSS OF BULLION CITY (1941)

(Western, Black & White, 1 hr 1 min)

Universal - U.S.A.

DIRECTOR:

Ray Taylor

CAST:

Johnny Mack Brown (As: Tom Bryant), Fuzzy Knight, Nell O'Day, Maria Montez (As: Linda Calhoun)

COMMENTS:

It's a race to see who can get whom first when a tricky sheriff is exposed by Brown and his nit-witted stooge. Western shows Brown at his straight-shooting best.

Maria Montez stars as Linda Calhoun, a virtuous young lady who lives according to her religious beliefs and loves, in silence, the hero of this story (Tom Bryant/Johnny Mack Brown).

This role was very important for Maria Montez future, because it was the first one as a co-star; on the other hand, it is the only one of her movies in which she says some phrases in Spanish.

THE WAY OF THE WEST - 1934 - BOBBY NELSON - RARE DVD
Lewis Allen Alderson and Emma Elizabeth Roberts Alderson were married in Sheridan, Wyoming on December 15, 1892. They began a small cattle ranch about a hundred miles north in Rosebud County, Montana. Over the years, along with their three sons, they purchased small ranches around them, building their land into the large ranch that is still in the Alderson family and still known as the “Bones Brothers Ranch.”

In 1915, oldest son Floyd left the ranch to become a stage coach driver in Yellowstone Park. With the advent of motion pictures in California, the young cowboy went to Hollywood and appeared in many silent westerns using the name “Wally Wales.” In 1936 he would change his stage name to Hal Taliaferro, the leading man in this adventure.

Hal Taliaferro had starred in many silent cowboy adventures, but when the studio he worked for shut down, he moved to other studios, usually as a henchman, posse rider, or other background cowboy with no significant face time. After thirty years of movie roles, he retired to the Bones Brothers Ranch with his two brothers, often spending his days painting landscapes of his magnificent Montana ranch lands.

In this adventure he is a wandering cowboy who gets into the middle of a fight between a man who leases land from the Federal Government to raise sheep on. Of course, the cattle men around this sheep ranch will try to do anything, including murder, to get the sheep rancher out of their cattle lands. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.

IN OLD SANTA FE - 1934 - KEN MAYNARD - RARE DVD
This cowboy western is a landmark in movies . . . It is the first movie with celebrated performer Gene Autry . . . well . . . Gene Autry was almost in this movie. Gene Autry played and sang locally, and his voice was used whenever cowboy hero Ken Maynard appeared to be singing. After this movie was finished, producer Nat Levine was impressed enough with the performance of Gene Autry that he signed him for his own movie, and the rest, as they say, is history. We will also see a young Gabby Hayes, who plays the part of 'Cactus' even more prickly than his name would suggest. And we see Smiley 'bullfrog' Burnette playing a bevy of instruments and singing with Gene, er, Ken, er, Ken with Gene's voice.

As our movie opens, it is 1934 in the old west, and an eastern fellow has a dude ranch near Santa Fe. Ken and Cactus are riding their horses towards the ranch so that Ken can enter a big horse race there and win some money for them. He is singing a song that exclaims that as long as a man has his dog, he can avoid the traps set by women - all he needs is a good dog. Soon a pretty young girl comes driving down the dirt trail in a convertible and almost runs them over, wrecking her car into a cactus bush. Ken's eyes light up, and he is smitten immediately by this girl. It turns out that she is the daughter of the fellow that owns the dude ranch, and she is coming west to join him. About that time a stage coach approaches with our bad guys in it. One of the bad guys is the son of a gangster that was partners with the dude ranch owner in the bad-old-days in the big city, and this son wants revenge against the dude ranch owner because he thought that he betrayed his papa. He also has eyes for the daughter as soon as he sees her, and seems to have the means to force her to become his.

So we have the romantic angle, the bad guys that will stir up lots of trouble for Ken and the girl's father, and some mighty good singing and dancing in between. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn and drizzle it with warm melted butter and settle down for one pretty good cowboy adventure of the old west in 1934 America.

RANGE WARFARE - 1934 - REB RUSSELL - RARE DVD
Six foot one, two hundred pound Lafayette “Reb” Russell was an all-star football running back for the University of Nebraska in 1928, and then a fullback for the Northwestern University Wildcats in 1930 and 1931. In 1932 he was given a small part in a movie as a football player before joining the 1933 Philadelphia Eagles football team. After seven games with the Eagles he was traded to the New York Giants where he ran for 68 yards in three games. Not finding fame and fortune on the NFL football field, he headed for Hollywood.

Back in Hollywood, he became a “B” movie cowboy, making several adventures like this one. After making a total of twelve motion pictures, and touring the west in a wild west show, he retired to ranching near Coffeyville, Kansas. On his ranch he experimented with high-yield agriculture, often lecturing on a modern approach to farming. In 1964 he ran as a Democrat for Congress but lost to the incumbent and remained on his farm until his death in 1978.

In this adventure he is a U.S. Marshal heading to a small town in search of cattle rustlers. He doesn’t even get to the town before he is ambushed by an outlaw that he put in prison a few years earlier. Avoiding death seems to be his best talent as he discovers that nearly everyone around him wants to kill him. HITTIN THE TRAIL - 1937 - TEX RITTER - RARE DVD
This was one of the earlier uses of Robert Tansey's favorite plot (only the 3rd time he had trotted it out of the stable, but he got six more films out of it in later years) in which a group of outlaws (wrongly jailed this time) are let out to join up with the good guys against a worse bunch of outlaws. And, not unusual in the B-western genre, most of the production crew wore several hats; director Robert N. Bradbury and supervisor Lindsley Parsons wrote a song for Tommy Bupp, one of the actually good kid actors of the time who proved real quick-like that singing wasn't his strong suit, while Robert Emmett Tansey worked three jobs under three names... Robert Emmett on story and screenplay, Robert Tansey as the production manager and Al Lane as the assistant director.
