THE BIRD OF PARADISE - 1951 - DEBRA PAGET - RARE DVD - COLOR
With: DEBRA PAGET, LOUIS JOURDAN, JEFF CHANDLER

Directed by Delmer Daves

Bird of Paradise is a movie that stays in your mind after you see it for its fascinating story, natural sceneries and acting. Debra Paget is so sweet and sweet and sweet in her performance of "Kalua". Jourdan's acting was very good also as the leading man. I dont know if the negative of this film has been lost or what. But is a good question why the studios has not released this film in video. The only one available is the one of the 30's. I think we should have available on VHS and DVD this wonderful 1951 version. An amazing love story

THE PRINCE WHO WAS A THIEF - 1951 - TONY CURTIS - PIER LAURIE - RARE DVD - COLOR
Universal's newest "heartthrobs" Tony Curtis and Piper Laurie were first teamed in this lavish adaptation of Theodore Dreiser's The Prince Who Was a Thief. Curtis stars as Julna, the rightful heir to a Middle Eastern throne. Kidnapped in infancy, Julna is raised as a thief by the roguish Yussef (Everett Sloane). Eventually, however, Julna's true identity is revealed, prompting him to lead a revolt against the evil, usurping Mustapha (Donald Randolph). Piper Laurie steals the show as Tina, a carnival contortionist who falls in love with Julna and helps him regain his throne (most of Laurie's trickier stunts were performed in long shot by a much heftier double). Fine escapist entertainment, The Prince Who Was a Thief secured major stardom for both its leading players. And no, this is not the film in which Tony Curtis utters the apocryphal line "Yonduh lies duh castle of my faddah."

THE MAGIC CARPET - 1951 - LUCILLE BALL - JOHN AGAR - RARE DVD - COLOR
Okay, this movie is a cheap Saturday matinée type film from the 1950's, but heck, that is all it is meant to be. It is one of those silly Arabian nights movies that is fun to watch. I wish it were released on DVD, as I would gladly buy it. As a child, I liked this movie when I saw in on television, and just recently saw it again and still like it. Runs in the family as those 1950 Universal Studio Tony Curtis "Son Of Ali Baba" type films and "Son Of Sinbad" with Vincent Price. These movies may not be great in any sense of the word, but they sure are fun to watch one right after the other when there is nothing else to do!! And besides, like my summary said, where else can you find a film that has Lucy Ricardo, Perry Mason and Abner Kravitz in it??

THE DESERT HAWK - 1950 - RARE DVD - YVONNE DE CARLO - RICHARD GREENE
The Desert Hawk (1950) DVD Yvonne De Carlo Richard Greene

The Desert Hawk deserves to be seen on the basis of its cast alone. No more believable than any of Universal's other sword-and-sand epics, this one stars Yvonne de Carlo as Princess Shaharazade (sic) and Richard Greene as Omar, aka the Desert Hawk. By day a humble blacksmith, the Desert Hawk spends his evenings battling against the oppresive regime of Prince Murad (George Macready). One of the Hawk's tactics is to trick Shaharazade into marriage, so that he can enlist the aid of the army commanded by the Princess' father. Murad retaliates by kidnapping Shararazade, leading to an exciting climactic rescue. Never mind all that: the real fun in Desert Hawk is spotting the celebrities-to-be in the supporting cast. Playing the villainous Captain Ras is none other than Rock Hudson, while the Desert Hawk's loyal companions Aladdin and Sinbad are played, respectively, by Jackie Gleason and Joe Besser--and surprise, Joe is heavier than Jackie! 1950 PLEASE NOTE: THE COLORS ARE A LITTLE WASHED OUT ON THIS VERY RARE, MUST SEE CLASSIC!

191 This RARE 1929 Pre-Code war aviation action-adventure B&W sound movie dvd release is titled... FLIGHT

This early Frank Capra talkie stars popular screen action team Jack Holt and Ralph Graves as U. S. marines stationed in Nicaragua. The "two guys fighting over one gal" throughline is there because the audience expected it -- and besides, leading lady Lila Lee is awfully cute. But the meat of the story lies in the fact that Holt and Graves are pilots, required to fly their Curtis fighter-bomber on dangerous missions. The flight scenes, shot without the benefit of special effects or back projection, are truly awe-inspiring, and served as stock footage for countless films in future years. Released in both silent and sound versions, Flight was a major success. (This RARE dvd is of the sound version.) Its effectiveness is all the more remarkable when one realizes that star Jack Holt had a lifelong fear of flying!

He learns about the Shangri-La's mystical ability to preserve the youth of all who choose to remain there, and learns that he has been chosen as leader of the mysterious place. Conway must decide whether to spend the rest of his life in Shangri-La or risk taking Lo-Tsen beyond its boundaries and carry out his original mission to help the fourth prisoner return to England. Among the many musical numbers are "Shangri-La," performed by Marisa Pavan; "A Little Bit Confused," performed by Alice Ghostley; "Second Time in Love," which includes a dance routine, performed by Helen Gallagher and Gene Nelson; and "Lost Horizon," performed by Richard Basehart. SYNOPSIS: How can you beat Bette Davis and Ernest Borgnine as a pair of free-spirited hippies on a crime spree? That's the premise of this comedy starring the two Oscar-winning veterans. Bunny O'Hare (Bette Davis) is an elderly woman living in New Mexico who is trying to keep herself afloat financially while supporting her two grown children, both of whom have fallen into bad straits. Thanks to a mistake by her bank, Bunny is evicted from her home, which is quickly torn down, but not before one Bill Green (Ernest Borgnine) can repossess her commode. Bunny is left with nowhere to go, and Bill allows Bunny to tag along in his trailer after he leaves. Bunny soon learns that Bill was once a bank robber who is still on the run from the law, and she persuades him to show her the ropes so she can steal her nest egg back from the bank. Dressed as hippies, Bunny and Bill pull the job, but rather than escape to Mexico, Bunny decides to stay in the Southwest and rob more banks with Bill to help keep her kids out of hock. Bunny O'Hare also features Jack Cassidy, John Astin, and Jay Robinson. Bunny O' Hare is a very funny movie that is one of Bette Davis's best movies from her later years. There is a great chemistry between Bette Davis and Ernest Borgnine.

FIRE OVER ENGLAND - 1937 - VIVIEN LEIGH, LAURENCE OLIVIER
Definitely a wonderful movie, Fire over England, brings to the screen the story of a young English naval officer as he strives to uncover a plot, find the conspirators and warn the Queen of the imminent threat of foreign invasion.

The setting is 1558 England. King Philip of Spain has collected enough gold from the colonies in the Americas that he has built the Spanish Armada. In addition he has set up a network of spies and operatives in Queen Elizabeth's court who serve as his eyes and ears in England.

The clash between England and Spain is as fascinating as the conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism, and both are presented very well in the film.

Needless to say, the Hollywood heavyweights Vivien Leigh and Lawrence Olivier as well as the rest of the cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least!

KISS THE GIRLS AND MAKE THEM DIE DVD 1966 MIKE CONNORS
TITLE: Kiss the Girls and Make Them Die

DIRECTOR: Henry Levin & Arduino Maiuri

YEAR: 1966

CAST: Mike Connors, Dorothy Provine, Raf Vallone, Terry-Thomas, Margaret Lee and Nicoletta Machiavelli

REGION CODE: 0 Region All / Free DVD-R (playable worldwide)

FORMAT: NTSC

SYNOPSIS: Kiss The Girls & Make Them Die (to give it its American title) was one of a number of films in the '60's designed to cash in on the success of James Bond. It was made by Dino De Laurentis, a man who, like Irwin Allen, has attracted more than his fair share of derision over the years, despite having produced some pretty entertaining pictures, of which this is one.

It begins with a curious scene in the Brazilian jungles as eccentric English explorer Lord Aldric (Terry-Thomas) comes across a village where no children have been born in years, and despite the best efforts of the women the men appear completely disinterested in sex. Aldric makes notes in his diary, only to be shot. The diary then goes missing - having been taken by one of the bearers - and a gang of villains, headed by wealthy industrialist David Ardonian (Raf Vallone) set out to recover it. We then move to Rio De Janeiro. An American is watching a pretty girl and a young man through binoculars.

In 1847, South African Paul Van Riebeck travels to County Limerick, Ireland to buy horses from Squire O'Neill for his commando group that is fighting to establish a Dutch Free State in land controlled by the fierce Zulus. Paul is immediately attracted to O'Neill's fiery daughter Katie, who returns his affections, despite the fact that both are stubborn and proud. Katie is annoyed, however, that Paul, who calls her by the South African diminutive Katje, talks only about his duties toward his country. After a ball hosted by the O'Neills, Paul embraces Katie, and his passionate kisses make her believe that he will stay. The next day, Paul announces his intention to return to South Africa alone, and although Katie pleads with him to take her along, Paul maintains that she is too refined to survive the rough life he endures in the untamed environment of South Africa. After Paul departs, O'Neill dies and the potato blight sweeps through the country, impoverishing everyone. Katie marries her good-hearted neighbor, Shawn Kildare, and, remembering Paul's advice to find "a more merciful land," convinces Shawn to start a new life in South Africa. Their son Terrance is born during the long sea voyage to Cape Town, and upon their arrival, they learn that the other settlers are making an 800-mile trek to the Hoffen Valley, a burgeoning farming community. Katie is especially pleased to hear that Paul's commandos are to escort the travelers through the dangerous Zulu country, and persuades Shawn to join the trek. The leaders of the group, Oom Simon Hout and his son Kurt, are wary of Shawn's inexperience, but Kurt, who desires Katie, helps them. Upon arriving at the river where they are to meet Paul, Kurt is puzzled by Paul's absence, and grows concerned when every Zulu village they pass is inhabited only by women and children. Soon after, one of the scouts reports the nearby presence of a massive Zulu war party, and the settlers prepare for battle. Although they are equipped only with spears, the warriors greatly outnumber the settlers and claim many lives, including Shawn. 1955

Jean-Paul falls in love with Edouard's arrogant daughter Marie, who returns his affections but is more interested in wealth than in love. Believing that if he stays, he will eventually kill the sadistic Edouard, Jean-Paul plans to run away. Meanwhile, Scotsman MacDougal arrives in the village in search of Father Benoit, who was once a missionary in Guatemala and is a renowned scholar of Mayan texts. AN EXTREMELY RARE LATE FORTIES NORTHWEST ADVENTURE EPIC WITH A GREAT CAST.

Mrs. Mike" is a better than average early Hollywood depiction of life in Canada's far north. Life in the North-West Territories in the early 1900's had moments of great beauty but was for the most part, harsh and cruel. The film captured the essence of this without resorting to standard stereotypes. There isn't a single manhunt of the "a Mountie always gets his man" variety in the whole plot. Most of the characters managed to portray depth and an insight into their difficult lives.

UNDER TWO FLAGS (1936) - RONALD COLMAN - DVD
In the turn of the century (the 20th) Algiers, a Sergeant (Ronald Colman) in the French Foreign Legion incurs the animosity of his superior (Victor McLaglen) when the Major believes the Sergeant has stolen the affection of a cabaret performer (Claudette Colbert). In actuality, the Sergeant has his sights set on a visiting English rose (Rosalind Russell). Based on a novel by Ouida which had already been filmed four times (including a silent with Theda Bara in the Colbert role) by the time director Frank Lloyd got his turn, the emphasis is on romance rather than action. Colman is all wrong for a romantic action hero but fortunately a sexy and sassy Claudette Colbert manages to convince us that he's worth slobbering over. While it's no GUNGA DIN or BEAU GESTE, it's a decent "Meet me at the oasis under the blue moon" romanticization of colonial North Africa. Palm Springs and Arizona stand in for Algeria. With Gregory Ratoff, Nigel Bruce, John Carradine and Onslow Stevens as the warring Arab chieftain.

FLIGHT TO TANGIER - DVD - JOAN FONTAINE, 1953
What a lovely journey back to a time when one could enjoy the grace and acting talent of Joan Fontaine, and be treated to the charms of the popular french actress of the time, Corinne Calvet, and with a young, not so villainous yet, Jack Palance. The story is entertaining, fast paced, with good dialogue, and hooks you at the very beginning as all the players come together at an airport in Tangier, waiting for a plane that soon flies overhead, then crashes in the nearby desert. The rescue teams rush to the site of the crash, only to find a crashed plane, with neither pilot nor passenger in the wreckage. Strange, a plane with nobody on-board, and suddenly, all these curious, disparate people poking around the wreckage, looking for something, but what? Entertaining and a pleasant way to pass an afternoon. You'll love the way the director handled the bathing scene with the lovely Calvet.

Accompanying Matt, is young Toni (Claudia Cardinale), whom Matt had raised since her aerialist mother Lili (Rita Hayworth) left them years before. Just before he departs from New York, Matt is reminded that Lili may be somewhere in Germany. Upon their arrival in Europe, much of the equipment is lost when their ship sinks in a Spanish port. Matt doesn't let that get the best of them, and he is soon up and running with the show, becoming a hit throughout Europe. Against Matt's wishes, Toni trains to become an aerialist like her mother. A quiet figure in the shadows proudly watches Toni rehearse her daring routines. The writing team of Ben Hecht, James Edward Grant and Julian Halevy adapted their screenplay from a story by Philip Yordan and Nicholas Ray. Though this was not a gunslinger role for Wayne, Matt Masters was not a far stretch. This could have been due to the fact that Wayne had previously worked on several projects with director Henry Hathaway and writers Hecht and Grant -- and the part was altered to suit him.

The Adventures of Hajji Baba (1954) DVD
The Adventures of Hajji Baba (1954) Director:

Don Weis Writers: Richard Collins (screenplay), James Justinian Morier (novel) Stars: John Derek, Elaine Stewart, Thomas Gomez In the 1950s, historical spectaculars set in the Far or Middle East became the repository for exploitive tales of eroticism, pure lust, and concupiscent freedom. The "decadence" of previous times gave American filmmakers an excuse to satisfy viewers' libidinal and voyeuristic desires. All this holds true for The Adventure of Haji Baba, a racy, sex-soaked oasis of a film. John Derek stars as an Persian barber given a mission to escort the beautiful princess Fakzia across a desert to her wedding. Haji bets a friend that he will have succeeded in seducing her by the trip's end and the games begin.

EBB TIDE - 1937 - FRANCES FARMER, RAY MILLAND - COLOR DVD
Ebb Tide (1937)

Director: James P. Hogan

Writers: Robert Louis Stevenson (novel), Lloyd Osbourne (novel) Stars: Oskar Homolka, Frances Farmer, Ray Milland

Technicolor is the main attraction of this overheated South Seas adventure. Ray Milland, Akim Tamiroff and Barry Fitzgerald play three shifty sailors who commandeer a smallpox-ridden boat and set out to sea. A typhoon washes them ashore on a faraway Pacific island, which is ruled by a white religious fanatic (Lloyd Nolan) who has set himself up as the local god. The three sailors anxiously await an opportunity to appropriate the "god's" valuable stash of pearls and head for the mainland. Only one of the sailors escapes to tell his story; check out the cast list and guess which one survives. The third filming of Robert Louis Stevenson and Lloyd Osborne's novel, {Ebb Tide} is rough going until Lloyd Nolan shows up to deliver the picture's best and subtlest performance. The story would be filmed again in 1947 as Adventure Island.

He is approached by his Venezuelan oilmen friends, Miguel Orlando and his adopted son Lago Orlando, with a request to help put out the fire at their oil derrick number seven. TRIPOLI - 1950 - DVD - WITH JOHN PAYNE
The U. S. Marine Corps hymn starts with"From the halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli", and this film's story purports to be the reason why, and is give or take a few incidents in this movie: It is 1805 and the Tripoli pirates have challenged America's right to freedom of the seas---all of them, anywhere---so United Stares warships were sent to that port to bottle up their fleet and set the riff-raff right concerning who could sail where. (History begins to suffer a bit along about this point.) A U. S. Marine unit, headed by Lieutenant O'Bannon, was sent to attack them from the rear. He organized his unit around Hamet, Pasha of Tripoli, in exile after being overthrown by his brother. In Hamet's court was Sheila D'Arneau, a diploma's daughter, who disguises herself as a dancing girl, and joins the group of eight U. S. Marines and Hamet supporters in their march across the Libyan desert. O'Bannon and Shelia argue all the way to Tripoli.

TRAPPED - 1931 - KENNE DUNCAN - RARE DVD
This action crime adventure was filmed before the censoring Hays Office began making the death scenes gentler, so there is more gunfire and death on screen that in most of the gangster movies of the next decades. 1931 automobiles also steal more film time than in most old movies, almost to the point where the cars are the stars. The adventure opens with a 1931 auto chase scene that is reminiscent of the cowboy movies that would follow. In many cowboy movies there is a scene where the lady is on a runaway horse, or in a runaway buggy or stage coach, and the leading man gallops bravely after the frightened lady and saves her from disaster. In the opening scene, our leading man is racing his 1931 convertible through the winding hillside when he spots another convertible ahead, and he notices that the chauffeur is attacking the lady passenger, so he speeds up until the cars are beside each other and jumps from his car into the other car and saves the young lady. . . . .

FORGOTTEN WOMEN - 1931 - MARION SHILLING - RARE DVD
This early talking picture starts out as a movie about the movie business, but quickly turns into a gangster flick. The opening scene is of a movie set where we meet three gals trying to become famous actresses, and the director, who is trying to grind out a scene before the day is over. No one else would have you take a good look at the ‘director’ in the fake movie scene instead of the three leading ladies, but I think he is worth a good look. William Beaudine was a real movie director, although he did not direct this motion picture. He merely acted as the ‘director’ in the scene we are watching being filmed. Records of many of his early works were not kept well, but it is possible that William Beaudine directed more motion pictures and television shows between 1915 and 1966 than any other person ever before or since. In this opening scene he is in front of the camera instead of behind it, and that makes it a very unique and rare scene. Now on to the pre-code story that could never be shown during the 1934-1968 movie censoring years.

Patricia is a movie ‘extra’ who works once in a while but is mostly broke and out of work. She loves Jimmy, an aspiring newspaper reporter for the Hollywood Sun, and he is about to get his big break when East Coast gangster Sleek Moran hits town. Once Jimmy becomes famous as a newspaper man he will be able to take his sweetheart Pat into his arms and they can ‘sit on the moon’ looking down on the world. Thanks to the old lady actress living with Pat, he gets his big break by exposing the gangster’s plans, and Jimmy becomes the city editor and the rising star at the newspaper. But suddenly this gangster flick turns into a destructive romantic triangle when the beautiful and sophisticated young daughter of the newspaper owner decides to make Jimmy her man.

Unfortunately in real life and the business of making ones way through life, there are winners and there are losers. Ralph M. Like was a pioneer in the science of adding sound to motion pictures and always had a good day job with movie companies, but he wanted more. Mr. Like had a passion to become a wealthy and famous motion picture producer and using his earnings from his day job he bought several small but struggling motion picture companies with the dream of becoming the head of a major motion picture company. Over the years he bought or started at least five motion picture studios and churned out crime dramas and action pictures during the 1930's, many featuring his pretty brunette wife Blanche Mehaffey, who stars in this crime adventure. He used the same pool of actors that we see in many of the films from the larger studios, his plots had as much interesting dialogue as many other movies, but none of his pictures hit a home run . . . for some reason every time he took a stab at the brass ring he wound up broke and out of business. Fortunately he never gave up his day work as a sound engineer, but as a motion picture producer . . . he won a place in motion picture history with 32 movies to his producing credit, but he never earned enough money from them to leave his day job at the bigger studios. In this crime adventure his real-life wife Blanche Mehaffey is the sister of a fellow that died in the electric chair after being framed for murder by a gangster and she is trying to clear her brother's name and get the goods on the gangster, but he frames her for murder, and she may face the electric chair just like her brother did! Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter on it and enjoy the show.

LOVE BOUND, MURDER ON THE HIGH SEAS - 1932 - JACK MULHALL - RARE DVD
Directed by Robert F. Hill

The Actors: Jack Mulhall, Natalie Moorhead, Clara Kimball Young

One of my favorite lines to open a movie about gold diggers is, “Half of the women in New York are working women, and the other half are working men.” Since the beginning of time there have been women who specialize in tantalizing and tempting wealthy men for the sole purpose of taking their money. “Gold Diggers” is the term used most often in classic movies to describe these women. Some wealthy men, fully understanding the motives of these women, enjoy the attention of the gold digging beauties and even encourage them. Some do not.

Platinum blonde actress Natalie Moorhead is Verna Wilson, and as our adventure opens, we discover that she has just accused a wealthy man of having an affair with her and won a fortune in a court settlement. The accusation is false, but the jurors take one look at the beautiful blonde and assume that because they would have an affair with her, he probably did also.

HELD FOR MURDER - 1932 - CONWAY TEARLE - RARE DVD
This is an early 'talkie' and definately 'pre code,' before the Hays Office started censoring films in the U.S. This story is about a group of wealthy men and women, and their 'relations' with each other, and a murder wrap tossed in for good measure. Men in this movie are allowed and encouraged to have relations with many women, but the woman that they marry must be chaste. Of course, the women are just as adventurous as the men, they just need to be smarter and hide their infidelites.

Our movie opens with Steven Kennedy and Joan Manners on a cruise ship. Steven is asking Joan for the twentieth time if she will marry him. And she playfully turns him down once again. They met five days ago at the beginning of the cruise, and Steven fell madly in love with her on first sight. She wonders why such a successful lawyer never married, and he finally tells her while they are enjoying drinks in his stateroom. He tells the story of his friend who had a wife that ran away with another man, leaving his friend with a young baby girl. The man fell apart and couldn't care for his young baby, so Steven raised her on behalf of his friend and let her believe that she was Steven's kid sister. Joan is so touched by this lovely story that she agrees to marry Steven on the spot. Ahhh . . . . sounds like love is triumphant again. But not so fast.

WOMEN WON'T TELL - 1933 - SARAH PADDEN - RARE DVD
1933 was the fourth year of the Great Depression that would last until the huge spending to build shipa and airplanes for the Second World War pulled the economy out of the dumper. The motion picture industry was churning out stories now known as 'Poverty Row' pictures, many of which were what we would later call ‘rags to riches’ tales, involving characters that are caught in the depths of poverty who struggle against all odds and end up on the sunny side of the street.

As our adventure opens we are at the city dump, where a kindly lady and her young daughter live. They have a shanty built with discarded wood and other items from the trash. Sarah Padden is Aggie Specks, the Duchess of the Dump. She commands a crew of men to pick through the trash to find items that could be sold. She sells them and pays the men who help her search for discarded treasures.

One of the men wants to marry Sarah, but Joe Kummer, a burly trash truck driver, tells the man that the Duchess of the Dump will never marry the man, and he knows why. He knows a secret about Aggie’s past that no one else knows, and he ain’t talking.

When the crabby millionaire businessman who owns a factory next to the dump dies, the Duchess of the Dump inadvertently mentions that her young daughter should inherit his fortune. Aggie tells a newspaper reporter that her young daughter is the illegitimate daughter of the wealthy businessman.

CASH, IF L WERE RICH - 1933 - EDMUND GWENN - RARE DVD
October 9, 1933 - almost four years after the disastrous New York Stock Market Crash of 1929 and the resulting economic Great Depression, in Britain the wealthy have also lost much of their wealth, and liquid assets . . . 'Cash' . . . is in very short supply. This is the tale of a once wealthy businessman and his lovely daughter, who are accustomed to great wealth, but are reduced to writing bad checks for food, and a young man that has the job of shutting off their electricity because they cannot pay their bills. Oh, did I mention that they find a huge stash of American CASH? How will the huge pile of 'found' money affect them? In strange and amazing ways this comedy about cash and how it affects different people in a time when cash is rare. This movie was originally named 'Cash,' and that is the best title for this adventure, and it is definately the overpowering theme of this poverty era feel-good film.

Our movie opens in the mansion of Edmund Gilbert, played by 'Santa Clause' from The Miracle on 34th Street Santa Clause Edmund Gwenn. With him are his daughter and his butler, and they sneak a peek out the window to see who is knocking. They determine that it is not a bill collector, so they open the door. Unfortunately a bill collector follows the man inside and he sticks a large poster on the wall declaring their debt, and they cannot remove it legally. Edmund is horrified because he has invited several money men over for drinks in the hopes of getting them to invest some of their money into a venture that he has thought up. Next, one of the money men calls and says that they can have dinner with Edmund instead of just drinks. Edmund is now in a deeper pickle . . . he has no food to serve, and no money to buy food. So he does what any good businessman would do, he writes a bad check to the grocer for the makings of a fine dinner.

THE MAN WHO DARED - 1946 - LESLIE BROOKS - FORREST TUCKER - RARE DVD
The screenplay was adapted from a radio script by Maxwell Shane and Alex Gottlieb, and was first shown as the bottom-half of a double feature with the top-billed "Without Reservations" at Hollywood's Pantages Theatre: A newspaper columnist, against capital punishment and crusading against murder convictions based on circumstantial evidence, tampers with evidence found at a murder scene in such a manner that it leads to him being accused of the crime, convicted and on his way to the state prison to be executed. The tampering was to prove a point about circumstantial evidence, and he succeeded in proving that circumstantial evidence will indeed get one convicted. But, now, his problem is to prove his innocence, and he is not in the position to do so.

THE EDGE OF THE WORLD - 1938 - JOHN LAURIE - RARE DVD
Today we venture to an isle off the coast of Scotland, the home of my favorite adult beverage. We are much further away than my favorite isle of Islay, in the middle of the raging ocean, where the craggy rocks of Foula still challenge the mighty waves of the sea. When the Roman fleets sailed around Britain they saw this island in the distant blue haze of the misty ocean and named it "Ultima Thule" . . . The Edge of the World. Every great motion picture blends enough truth into the story to make it authentic, and enough fiction to make it exciting to watch, and the writer/director of this story about the rugged people of Scotland brought both to the screen. Most if not all of the 1937 inhabitants of Foula, Scotland appear in this adventure, although I couldn't determine who was who to capture photos of these amazing people . . . if any of the descendants of David of Mucklegrind, or the Ibister family, or any of the other inhabitants can recognize their family, let me know and I'll honor them with a photo from the movie in the photo gallery under the movie. Thanks to the producer and director of this adventure, I will be able to preserve the 1938 citizens of Foula, Scotland for the whole world to discover forevermore . . . Wouldn't it be amazing if there were a motion picture record of YOUR home town from almost a hundred years ago? As our adventure opens we meet the skipper of a yacht, Mr. Graham, who happens to be Michael Powell, the author and director of the movie. With him is actor Niall MacGinnis, playing the part of Andrew Gray, and they are visiting the uninhabited isle of fictional Hirta, where Andrew Gray tells the yachtsman about the island and its people before it was abandoned. We travel back several years as he tells his story . . . and we get to enjoy the lifestyles of this rugged and proud Scottish island community in their struggle for survival against the winds and the waves buffeting the edge of their world, with scenes of the landscape of the island of Foula that will positively take your breath away. Foula is still a thriving island today and I imagine that many of the grandchildren of the islanders in this story are still living there today. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.

On the trail of Raglan, they had to deal with his henchmen and also a party of the primitives, sent by the High Priest to retrieve the Goddess. With the Goddess still in Raglan's hands, they were seized by the natives and Tarzan locked in a small cell with a loosely-tethered lion, Ula in an adjacent cell under guard from a hideous jungle hag, and Martling being forced to watch his bumbling valet, George, being tortured by the natives with the ...

UNDER THE BIG TOP - 1938 - MARJORIE MAIN - RARE DVD
Stanley LeFevre Krebs was a Reformed Minister who believed that he could communicate with the spirit world. He wasn’t the kind of man who would perform ‘parlor tricks’ with the spirits, in fact he exposed several nationally know spiritual mediums, writing books that showed how they faked their séance meetings. He also wrote one of the first books explaining the art of hypnosis, and how fake spiritualists could use suggestion to imply spiritual contact.

In 1921, actress Marjorie Main married Dr. Krebs, who was twenty-six years older than she was. By all accounts, their relationship was not romantic, but it seems to have been a real, very close relationship. What he taught her about the spirit world remains a secret, but after his death in 1935, three years before she made this film, Marjorie Main continued talking to him, on stage, during filming, without missing a beat.

Occasionally, in the middle of a scene, in the middle of a dialogue, Marjorie Main would stop, turn and speak out loud to her departed husband, listening for his answer. Then she would turn to the director and tell him that she was ready to proceed, turning back to the cameras and actors, beginning again right where she left off in the dialogue.

In this circus adventure, Marjorie Main is the widow of a circus owner, and her hard-boiled personality tries to keep the circus together so that the performers can still earn a living. All of the performers and circus workers are accustomed to her angry, ‘life-is-tough, suck it up and get it done’ attitude. After all, it is the era of the Great Depression, and there are a lot of tough times to go around.

When her orphaned niece comes to live with her in the circus, she will discover that it is easier to tame a lion than the will of a young lady. In real life, Marjorie Main never had any children, and often commented that most of her famous roles were as a mother, and that took REAL acting skills! Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.

Director: Karl Brown

CRASHING THROUGH DANGER - 1938 - RAY WALKER - RARE DVD
In 1977, when our country was officially two hundred years old, our puritanical nation watched the first episode of a tv show that shocked much of the nation. Based on the British sit-com “Man about the House,” the first episode of “Three’s Company” aired, showing for the first time ever, a story line with one single man living in an apartment with two single girls. This would never have been allowed in any storyline during the motion picture censoring days of the movies.

So how does it come about that a 1938 romantic action adventure movie features three single men living with one single girl? I’m not completely sure, but here it is. It seems that the movie was filmed in 1935, as the censor board was beginning to censor movies, but was not released in the U.S., possibly because there was no way to make the story abide by the rules without ruining the whole plot. It opened in London in 1936, and then strangely, in 1938 it was allowed to open in the U.S., maybe without the official blessing of the Hays Office.

The meat of story revolves around three lusty electric company linemen who move in with a single girl and her maid. All three of the men fall in love with the girl, played by Sally Blane. What are the chances for survival of the friendship of three best buddies when they are living with one sexy woman? Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.

WANTED BY THE POLICE - 1938 - FRANKIE DARRO - RARE DVD
Frank Johnson Jr. was born in Chicago to a husband and wife who were flying trapeze and high wire walkers in the Flying Johnsons circus act. As soon as Frankie could walk his father started training him to walk on a wire . . . First very close to the ground, and then higher and higher off the ground. Unfortunately for the circus, the Flying Johnsons got divorced when Frankie was five years old, and that ended the circus act. Fortunately for Frankie, the circus was in Southern California when his parents broke up and within a year Frankie Johnson Jr. got a job in a motion picture, changing his on-screen name to Frankie Darro. At only five foot three inches tall he never became a ‘leading man who got the leading lady’ kind of actor, but because of his athletic abilities he became a stunt man, and then an action-adventure star in movies like this one. His most famous role was one where he is never seen . . . . Frankie Darro was inside Robby the Robot in the science fiction movie Forbidden Planet.

In this gangster crime adventure he is fresh out of high school and dreaming of becoming the next superstar baseball player like Babe Ruth. He lives with his widowed mother and big sister, and sis wants to quit her job and marry a policeman, but her job is the only income for Mom Murphy and kid brother Danny. After a talk with Mom, Danny decides to put his baseball career on hold and find a job to support his mom. He finally finds a car garage owner who will hire him for $18 a week to work on cars and help around the garage. What he doesn’t know is that this garage steals cars, fixes them up a bit and sells them to dishonest auto sales lots. He finds out when he is delivering a car to a car lot and returning another stolen car to the garage. His boss is selling cars in the territory controlled by another gangster, and the other gangster grabs the stolen car he is driving and kidnaps him. When Danny gets wise to the fact that he is working for gangsters he tries to quit, but his boss tells him that if he quits or blabs to the coppers he will spend 15 years in prison along with them. . . . . And his widowed mom really needs the money . . . . What to do . . . . What to do . . . . Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter over it and enjoy the show.

GANG BULLETS - 1938 - ANNE NAGEL - RARE DVD
There are a couple of ways to describe this classic old fashioned gangsters vs the law movie . . . of course . . . with my old fart brain I chose the way that you might predict.

The movie starts with a quote from the only man so far who has been both U.S. President and Supreme Court Chief Justice . . . William Howard Taft. Taft, from Cincinnati, Ohio, entered the national spotlight when President William McKinley, born in Niles, Ohio, just about a mile from where I am writing this, appointed him Governor-General of the Philippines in 1904. Anyway, the quote from Taft seems to say that because of our constitution, outlaws are able to thumb their noses at the law - that pesky constitution stacks the deck in favor of the criminals and all of the honest citizens suffer because of it. So if you think that our constitution should be changed, ignored, or overhauled to give government and the law more powers against criminals, you might enjoy this one.

Then there is the gambling thing. Back in 1938 our smart gangster runs illegal gambling joints - roulette, poker, slot machines, numbers running - in 1938 all of this was a terrible evil, worthy of every law enforcement agent's attention to crush and destroy. As I write this, I am hoping that the Ohio Lottery ticket in my pocket might be a winner, and the television reports that the new Horseshoe Casino in Cleveland is breaking records and bringing in tons of money for the beleaguered city and state budgets. Is this a lesson in the thought that the best way to eliminate crime is to make it legal and then tax the beejeebers out of it? Could be . . .

I, on the other hand, tend to shy away from debates about which way our ship of state should veer, and just look at the genius (in my opinion) way that the authors have crafted this crime adventure. Since it is well within the time of the Hays Office, we know that it must end with the bad guys getting caught, and the good guys winning. But there is the rub . . . maybe some of the good guys are really bad guys, and maybe some of the bad guys are really good guys . . . who can tell? Ahh, I can tell . . . and will. As an old fart, I'm always 'up' for a movie that illustrates the vast superiority of old wisdom to indefatigable young enthusiasm. Sure, the younger, smarter generation always thinks that the old timers have lost it - they just can't handle the new world that the youngsters have created. I know that I sure felt this way when I was young. But my old pappy used to wisely tell me that the older I got, the smarter he would become. I didn't understand what he was talking about when I was young, but now I can see more clearly. He was always pretty smart, I just didn't realize it until I was much older. Sometimes old-timers know a thing or two about how the world works that can surprise the heck out of the youngsters. That's my take on this movie, and I'm sticking to it :~)

THE DUKE OF WEST POINT - 1938 - LOUIS HAYWARD - RARE DVD
The United States Military Academy at West Point was created during our Revolutionary War with Britain and has been turning out some of the finest military leaders for the United States ever since.

In this story of the cadets a Brit Limey joins the new class and turns the place on its ears. But wait . . . you tell me that no British citizen could ever gain admission to West Point, because only U.S. boys are appointed to this Military Academy? Well, here is how it happens in this story.

Every man in the Earley family has attended West Point since the Revolutionary War, and Louis Hayward plays young Steven Earley, the next Earley son to attend this prestigious academy. But Steven has grown up in England and has just graduated from Cambridge!

His father, U.S. Colonel Earley, is the Military Attaché at the American Embassy in London, so young Steven has grown up in England and attended British schools, finally graduating from Cambridge. Steven has become a British athletic star known and admired around the Empire.

Now it is time for him to join the other men of the Earley family and attend West Point at the invitation of the President of the United States. Steven's father, Colonel Earley, played by Jonathan Hale, is worried about his son heading to West Point, and with good reason. Steven has grown up in a country that is divided from America by a common language.

Although the Yanks and the Brits speak the same language, their cultures and slang and accumulated history are very, very different, and Papa Earley is worried that son Steven is mentally 'British' and will have tremendous problems fitting in with the Yank boys, . . . and boy-oh-boy, is Papa correct!

The only question is, . . . Will Steven Earley, with his British background, speech and customs, morph into a U.S. Army West Point graduate? Will Steven Earley capture the heart of a very young blonde girl, played by a very young Joan Fontaine? Will Steven Earley conquer West Point and move on into an illustrious career in the Army or will West Point chew him up and spit him out like so much gristle?

Will Steven Earley be the first man in the Earley family to be kicked out of West Point? It appears so. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.

SIXTEEN FATHOMS DEEP - 1934 - SALLY O' NEIL - RARE DVD
Even before American Independence from Britain, this new land became famous around the world as the one place on the planet where hard, honest work could make the poorest pauper wealthy. In much of the world your wealth or poverty depended not on how smart or hard working you were, but on who your parents were. But in this new land it would be different. Anyone from anywhere, regardless of language or religion, or the size of their parents’ home and bank account, could start a business and earn a good living. And our ancestors came, from all over the globe. There are many examples of failure that some folk would mention to show that this is not a great country, and indeed, this is not a perfect nation filled with perfect people. But failure in itself is evidence of success – it is the other half of the freedom to succeed. The freedom to fail must always be allowed, or the sweet smell of victory would not be as good. Only when the deck is stacked can the outcome be assured, either for success or failure.

This is the story of Greek sponge divers who have come to America in search of a better life. Some of them have only the ambition to work for other Greek fishermen who own the boats and equipment that search the sea for sponges. Once in a while a young man gets a spark of passion to become the owner of a boat and grab a larger slice of the American Dream, and Joe Bethel, played by Lon Chaney Jr. is such a young man. His motivation, like many great achievers, is a woman. Sally O’Neil plays Rosita, the pretty young daughter of the saloon owner, and Joe is determined to buy his own boat and earn enough to marry Rosita and give her a good life.

Unfortunately, Joe must borrow $3,000 to purchase the boat that he wants, and there is only one man in town who can finance his boat. The richest man in town is Theo Savanis, played perfectly by actor George Regas. He is the kind of man who twists the American Dream so that he wins, at the expense of other hard working folk. He and his henchmen will make sure that none of the boat owners are successful enough to become independent, by sabotaging their fishing operations.

When Joe asks him for a loan, the bad guy is very anxious to give him the money to purchase a boat, and we soon learn why. The bad guy wants to marry young Rosita, and Joe is standing in his way. The bad guy will send one of his henchmen to get a job with Joe when he makes his first trip into the deep waters searching for sponges.

The henchman will sabotage the operation daily, making certain that Joe will not get a large amount of sponges, and indeed, his mission is to make sure that Joe never returns from that first sponge diving expedition. The henchman is very good at destroying Joe’s chance to earn the $3,000 to pay for the boat, but back on shore Joe’s girlfriend Rosita discovers the plot and steals a speed boat to find Joe and warn him.

When Rosita finds Joe’s boat and she warns him of the henchman, we discover that the henchman is at that moment far under the waves collecting sponges. Rosita wishes out loud that the henchman should die for what he has done, and suddenly, his air bubbles stop rising to the surface. Maybe Santa Margarita, the protector of sponge divers, has made Rosita's wish come true. . . . . All Joe and Rosita need to do to end the sabotage is wait and watch as the air bubbles disappear. . . . Just wait, and watch. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.

BEGGARS IN ERMINE - 1934 - LIONEL ATWILL - BETTY FURNESS - RARE DVD
John ‘Flint’ Dawson and his partner Jim Marley run a steel mill during the time that steel was replacing the wood in buildings and making possible the construction of skyscrapers and mighty bridges that could never be built with wood and nails. Steel is changing the world, but the men who make the steel are like all men since Cain and Abel.

There are two basic methods that business tycoons employ to grow their wealth. Some leaders fight and scratch and struggle to the top, destroying anyone and anything that gets in their way. They use their wit and the power of fear to great advantage, and they do indeed rise to the top many times.

Some leaders combine their wit to engage the help of many others who will join them on their quest. Napoleon Hill, who was taught the principles of wealth by Andrew Carnegie and Henry Ford, calls it the ‘Master Mind Group’ principle. One man of conviction and focus can accomplish great things indeed, but when one man can, by use of a pleasing personality and a plan, convince a group of men and women to join him in his vision, there is absolutely no limit to their efforts.

Jim Marley in this story is the first kind of businessman. He will steal Flint’s wife, contrive to dump a bucket of hot molten steel on his partner Flint to kill him, and continue to deceive and cheat everyone around him, until he alone owns every bit of the mighty steel mill and the wealth that goes with it.

Marley’s partner Flint Dawson will lose his legs when the molten steel is poured onto him, and while he is recovering in the hospital his wife will sell his half of the steel mill and take the money and sail to Europe. Flint Dawson gets out of the hospital with no money and no legs. The only thing he can do to earn his next meal is to become a beggar. But even though Flint has no legs and no money, he has a brain and he has a plan. He can do what Marley could never do. He can meet and befriend other beggars, . . . Thousands of beggars. One man with no legs, but thousands of friends, can get the best kind of revenge on his partner Marley. The very best kind of revenge. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.

Unfortunately, sitting nearby was another reporter for his newspaper, and the other fellow filed the news story before our hero could sober up.

Now, he has been fired, and as he is almost too drunk to walk, reports of a wealthy man being shot to death send all the reporters scrambling to get the story, . . . All the reporters except Scoop, who is put into a cab by his buddy and sent home to sleep it off.

The beautiful young wife of the dead man seems to be the killer, and she has disappeared. This leads to that and Scoop learns that the mysterious lady is the widow of the dead man and the chief suspect for his murder. Scoop will convince the lady to live with him in his apartment and try to coax her to confess to him so that he can deliver the killer to the cops and get the biggest story of his life into print.

THE WORLD ACCUSES - 1934 - DIKIE MOORE - RARE DVD
You may remember Paul Fix as the Marshal on The Rifleman television show, or you may remember him from some of his hundreds of appearances in cowboy westerns. He was one of the actors whose face you recognize, and whose voice you recognize, but you just can’t remember his name. He was usually a critical character in the story, but seldom the focus of the story.

Wilhelm Fix and his wife immigrated to New York from the Black Forest of Germany, and Wilhelm was a wealthy master brewer of fine beer until his death. His son Peter Paul Fix was born in 1901, and grew up on the estate that also housed the family brewery. When Peter Paul was a teenager his father died, the brewery was closed, and America was entering the First World War, so Peter Paul joined the Navy. After the war he lived with his sister in Zanesville, Ohio and married his Ohio sweetheart.

Peter Paul Fix had no idea what he wanted to do for a living, but he did know that he didn’t like the cold snowy Ohio winters, so he and his young bride went to sunny California and by chance settled in Hollywood. He became friends with another fellow looking for work named Clark Gable, and the two of them were hired to act in a touring group putting on plays up and down the California coast.

This led to that and they both discovered the motion picture business. In 1931 Paul Fix appeared in a movie starring Loretta Young and John Wayne. He must have been a natural-born actor, because even though he only had a small part in the movie, Loretta Young suggested that he chat with John Wayne and give him some acting tips. John Wayne and Paul Fix became fast friends, and it was Fix who suggested that John Wayne develop a unique screen trademark, and suggested a unique ‘rolling walk’ that became Wayne’s trademark gait.

John Wayne became much more famous than Paul Fix, but Wayne included Fix in as many of his movies as he could, and Paul Fix once remarked that John Wayne was often too generous, just like Wayne’s father.

In this adventure, a very young Paul Fix is the new husband of the leading lady, Vivian Tobin. He comes from a wealthy Fifth Avenue family, and she was an actress on Broadway. His mother will do whatever is necessary to separate them, especially now that they have a little baby boy. His wealthy mother thinks that an actress is an unfit mate for her son, and an unfit mother for her grandson. Poor Paul Fix, stuck in the middle. He has Mother-in-law with money and attitude, a Wife with a past, and will soon meet a murdering gangster. Pop a big bowl of white kernel popcorn with plenty of warm melted butter drizzled over it and enjoy the show.

TWO BROTHERS - 2004 - GUY PEARCE - DVD
1920s Indochina. In the wild, a pair of adult tigers have just had a litter of two male cubs. It is a loving family unit, with the two brothers having a bond through their adventurous spirit. In different incidents, the cubs are captured individually, and although both in captivity live very different lives. Their individual captures were directly or indirectly associated with the work of Aidan McRory, a treasure and big game hunter, whose main goal is to make as much money for himself by selling his largely illegally obtained artifacts and animal parts at auction in Europe. Through the process, he has an emotional connection with one of the cubs, who is eventually named Kumal, but of who he eventually loses track. The cubs' lives are affected negatively by a number of other people who are working solely toward their own end goals, but the other cub, who is eventually named Sangha, also makes an emotional human connection to a young boy named Raoul Normandin, the son of the area administrator. Similar to Kumal and Aidan, Raoul eventually loses track of his tiger friend. The second year of the cubs' lives, they now full fledged adult tigers, is different than their first, with a question being how their individual experiences in captivity will affect how they function in their much different new environments. Both Aidan and Raoul are determined to do whatever necessary to make sure what happens to the tigers are for the benefit of the lives they should be leading based on their history, with Aidan and Raoul perhaps having a different perspective on what that actually is.
